On Friday 14 February, as a leading part of Nottingham YouthStrike4Climate, Nottingham RCG took part in a protest and rolling picket in conjunction with a national day of action called by the UK Student Climate Network (UKSCN). The demonstration was called ‘Love Your Planet; Strike For It!’ and was designed to show that a respect for our planet’s environment demands action taken to protect it.
The demonstration called out the role of the British state, financial institutions and extractive corporations in driving the climate crisis.
A speaker for Nottingham RCG used the open microphone to raise the impossibility of any real action to save our planet within the confines of capitalism. Her conclusion was simple: that the fight to protect the environment must be consciously a fight for socialism against capitalism, for a planned economy which prioritises the needs of the people and is governed by the people.
