Nottingham RCG held an anti-imperialist week of action for climate justice between 6th – 13th November, as part of international protests during the COP26 UN summit on climate change.
On Saturday 6 November Nottingham RCG and our supporters took part in a March for Climate Justice to put forward the argument for the climate movement to confront imperialism – the driving force of the environmental crisis. Our lively anti-imperialist contingent lead chants and operated an open microphone that was taken up by many people on the demonstration.
On Wednesday 10 November we took to the streets again to protest outside high street banks. We showed that despite all their greenwashed lies, Britain’s banks play a massive role in facilitating the environmental crisis and climate change. British banks such as NatWest, Barclays and HSBC are decimating the planet so rapidly and effectively that the Nottingham RCG decided to nominate them for a special award – the Race to Disaster Award; complete with a bouquet of oil-slick flowers to compliment the accumulated $268 billion in fossil fuel investments these banks have made in the past five years.
On Saturday 13 November we raised our voices against imperialism and environmental catastrophe with an open mic speak out in Nottingham’s city centre. As the sham COP26 conference drew to a close, Nottingham RCG was talking to people about the urgent need to dismantle capitalism and fight for a socialist system which puts people and the planet before profits. We showed solidarity with socialist Cuba. As the most sustainably developed country in the world, Cuba is an inspiring example of what is possible when the working class and oppressed take power to transform society.
