The Revolutionary Communist Group – for an anti-imperialist movement in Britain

Sergio Lagos: a revolutionary fighter 1 December 1930 – 1 January 2020

Sergio Lagos

Comrades from Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! and Rock around the Blockade remember Sergio for his tireless campaigning against injustice, in solidarity with revolutionary Cuba and Latin America, as well as with the Palestinian people and all those fighting for self-determination against imperialism.

Sergio was born in Chile and his stand against the Pinochet dictatorship led to his arrest and vicious torture in the Chacabuco concentration camp. Apparently in retribution for Sergio’s activities, his two young sons were among of the thousands of disappeared and murdered under Pinochet’s rule. Sergio himself was eventually able to escape and arrived in Britain in 1978.

We remember in particular his generosity and commitment to fundraising and material aid collection for Cuba during the Special Period, and his determination on the pickets during Pinochet’s detention in London in 1998. Sergio was completely non-sectarian, working with all forces committed to building anti-imperialist solidarity. He had political differences with the RCG over our analysis of the role played by his beloved Chilean Communist Party in the run-up to the 1973 coup, but he remained a stalwart supporter of our work in solidarity with Cuba.

A communist, an internationalist, Sergio was a committed comrade, who despite his personal history, believed in people and had hope for the future of humanity, which gave him a joyous approach to campaigning and appreciation of everyone involved.
