Ireland is England’s oldest colony and England has a long history of brutalising Irish land and people. Ireland too has a long history of fighting this occupation.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley takes place during the war of Irish independence in 1919-1921, as well as the Irish civil war of 1922-1923. The film depicts the horrors of imperialism and the need to fight back against it as the two brother join the Irish Republican Army to help the fight against the British.
