On 3 April RCG supporters in Nottingham took to the streets with Nottingham United Against Racism (NUAR) for an open mic speak out against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, as part of a national day of action. This followed regular protests organised since last July by NUAR, in which the RCG has played a central role.
More than 50 people participated, with many using the open mic in the Market Square to speak out against the injustices of the criminal justice system and personal experiences of racism, sexism and police repression. The RCG contributed its sound system and RCG supporters gave speeches that pointed to the roots of these injustices in capitalism, and the need to fight for a revolutionary socialist alternative. Nottingham People’s Assembly had called their own protest against the Bill later in the afternoon outside the Crown Court, and those present at the NUAR protest agreed to march to join them in solidarity. People from both demonstrations then joined forces to march to Nottingham’s Central Police Station, a regular target for protests over the last year, where an angry and defiant open mic rally was held. Many of those who attended for the first time are now getting organised.
