On Saturday 22 February, The Zionism Is Racism Defence Campaign held a demonstration in response to the arrest on 8 February at an anti-Zionist demonstration organised by Nottingham Revolutionary Communist Group (see here: https://tinyurl.com/uvmc6zn). The campaign – which Nottingham RCG was central in establishing – returned to the place of the arrest in a sign to Nottinghamshire Police that it will not be intimidated by attempts to criminalise solidarity with the resistance of the Palestinian people to the racist state of Israel. Hundreds signed the petition demanding that Nottinghamshire police drop their investigation.
As a speaker from Nottingham RCG said on the demonstration:
‘This racist arrest was the result of a years-long campaign to criminalise solidarity with the Palestinian people. The adoption of the racist IHRA definition – which turns reality on its head and presents opposition to the vicious racism of Israel as ‘anti-semitic’ – by universities, student unions, local councils and in September 2018 the Labour Party – has opened the door to the criminalisation of solidarity with the resistance of the Palestinian people. But this will not go unchallenged. We in the Zionism Is Racism Defence Campaign are fighting back against this state repression – if you care about the democratic right to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, you must join us.’
The campaign is ongoing. If you live in or near Nottingham, contact [email protected] or visit zionismisracismdefence.blogspot.com to find out about how you can get involved. Wherever you live please sign the online petition (https://tinyurl.com/shp3opk) and spread the word.
