Newly-released CIA files have revealed zero evidence of electronic fraud in Venezuelan elections, exploding the myth propagated by imperialism and its compliant media to justify attacks on the country and the criminalisation of President Nicolás Maduro.
Despite the constant monitoring of the country’s electronic voting system over two decades by the US intelligence agency, it was unable to confirm that any irregularities had taken place, saying only that ‘there are other factors that better explain the election results’. It does not, obviously, detail what these might be – because it would have then to concede the continued popular support enjoyed by the Bolivarian revolution, a conscious and mobilised Venezuelan working class and a weak, fragmented and venal opposition that can command little support on the ground. The CIA says only that its allegations – swiftly repackaged as facts – came from ‘limited sources’, ie its own pro-imperialist stooges and interested parties.
Yet this lie, widely reproduced by bourgeois media outlets such as the BBC and The Guardian in Britain, has over decades provided the pretext for imperialist sanctions on Venezuela, the withholding of its gold by the Bank of England, constant propaganda and vitriol against the PSUV government and now the kidnapping and imprisonment of the country’s legitimate, democratically-elected President Maduro.
